ODOROUS HOUSE ANTS
If you’ve ever crushed a tiny ant and been hit with a sharp, unpleasant smell — somewhere between rotten coconut and blue cheese — you’ve met an odorous house ant AKA “sugar ant.” These small but persistent invaders are one of the most common household ants in New Jersey, and they’re not shy about making themselves at home in your Sussex County kitchen or Morris County bathroom.
What Do Odorous House Ants Look Like?
Odorous house ants (Tapinoma sessile) are small, measuring roughly 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch long. They are dark brown to black in color with a single, hidden node between the thorax and abdomen — a feature that helps distinguish them from other species. Workers are all the same size, and colonies can range from a few hundred to over 100,000 individuals, with multiple queens per colony.
The telltale sign: crush one underfoot and you’ll notice the characteristic rotten, coconut-like odor that gives them their name.
Where Do They Live?
Outdoors, odorous house ants nest under stones, logs, mulch, and debris. In New Jersey’s wet spring and summer seasons, they often move indoors seeking food and moisture. Inside your home, they favor:
- Wall voids near hot-water pipes and heaters
- Under sinks, behind appliances, and along baseboards
- Beneath flooring materials, especially near moisture sources
They follow scent trails and will travel great distances to reach a food source, making them seem like they appear out of nowhere.
Why Are They a Problem?
Odorous house ants are after sugar — sweets, fruit, and any crumbs or spills left on countertops. While they don’t sting and pose no direct health threat, an infestation can grow rapidly thanks to their multiple-queen colony structure. Eliminating a single queen doesn’t solve the problem — that’s why DIY sprays often make colonies split and spread rather than die off.
Signs of an Infestation
- Visible ant trails, especially in kitchens and bathrooms
- Ants congregating around food or moisture sources
- A faint musty or rotting odor near nesting areas
How Bustabug Treats Odorous House Ants
Because colonies are large and have multiple queens, effective treatment requires a strategic approach — not just a spray bottle. At Bustabug, we identify the nest location, target entry points, and use professional-grade treatments designed to eliminate the colony at its source rather than scatter it. We’ll also help you identify the conditions attracting them in the first place, so the problem doesn’t come back.
