ASIAN LADY
BEETLES

Who doesn’t love ladybugs? These cute little bugs are fun and friendly. They’re also beneficial, eating aphids and other small bugs that can threaten crops.

But Asian lady beetles are often confused for ladybugs, and this is the more aggressive version of ladybugs. Asian lady beetles can bite (not hard) and release a nasty secretion. They can also invade homes and be harmful to dogs.

Asian Lady Beetles vs. Ladybugs

Asian lady beetles and ladybugs look similar but have some different characteristics. For example, Asian lady beetles are orange, red, or yellow, while ladybugs are bright red or orange. Asian lady beetles have variable spots (sometimes even no spots), while ladybugs almost always have black spots.

Asian lady beetles also have distinct markings. They tend to have a white “M” or “W” shape behind the head, while ladybugs do not have such markings. Asian lady beetles are also larger in size.

Dangers of Asian Lady Beetles

Asian lady beetles may seem harmless at first glance, but they can pose several dangers and nuisances. They include the following;

  • Indoor infestations. Asian lady beetles gather in large numbers, especially in fall, and sneak indoors to overwinter. They can stain walls, curtains, and furniture with their yellowish defensive fluid, which smells foul.
  • Biting. Asian lady beetles can bite humans, especially when they feel threatened. While their bites are not venomous, they can cause minor irritation, redness, or swelling in sensitive individuals.
  • Allergies and health issues. The presence of Asian lady beetles indoors may trigger allergic reactions in some people, including eye irritation, runny nose, and asthma-like symptoms. This is due to proteins in their body and secretions, which are similar to those in cockroach allergens.
  • Pet risks. If pets eat them, Asian lady beetles can cause mouth ulcers or irritation as well as gastrointestinal upset due to their toxic compounds.
  • Harm to native species. Asian lady beetles are aggressive competitors, often outcompeting and even preying on native ladybugs and beneficial insects. This disrupts local ecosystems and reduces biodiversity.

While Asian lady beetles help control garden pests outdoors, indoors they’re an invasive nuisance best handled through prevention and prompt removal. Preventive action in early fall is key to avoiding indoor problems.
