WASPS
Wasps are a common pest in New Jersey, especially during the warmer months. Some species are beneficial pollinators and natural predators, but others can pose serious stinging risks and build nests in or around homes.
Common types of wasps in New Jersey include:
- Yellowjackets. These wasps are aggressive and highly territorial. They build nests underground, in wall voids, or in eaves. They are frequently seen scavenging at picnics or trash cans.
- Paper wasps. These wasps build umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, decks, and porch ceilings. They help control garden pests and are not as aggressive but will sting if threatened.
- Bald-faced hornets. These are black with white markings. They build large, enclosed paper nests in trees or on structures. These hornets are also very defensive and can sting multiple times.
- Mud daubers. These wasps are solitary and non-aggressive. They rarely sting unless handled. They create tube-shaped mud nests on walls and ceilings.
Wasp stings can be painful, and some people experience severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Because of this, it’s important to be wary of where wasp nests may be. Nests near doors, windows, or decks pose safety hazards. Yellowjackets can be especially dangerous in late summer when colonies are larger and food is scarce.

Wasp Control Do’s and Don’ts
When dealing with wasps, you need to be careful. Here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind:
- Do identify the species. Learn what type of wasp you are dealing with, as some are more aggressive than others.
- Do use wasp sprays safely. Apply aerosol insecticides specifically labeled for wasps. Spray at night or early morning, when wasps are less active. Stand at a safe distance and aim directly at the nest entrance.
- Do wear protective clothing. Long sleeves, pants, gloves, and eye protection help reduce the risk of stings.
- Do remove food sources. Keep trash cans sealed, clean up food and sugary drinks, and remove fallen fruit from yards.
- Don’t swat at wasps. This can trigger aggression and release alarm pheromones, attracting more wasps.
- Don’t use fire or water. Burning or dousing a nest with water is not only dangerous but can also damage your property.
- Don’t ignore nests. Nests grow rapidly through summer. Early removal is easier and safer.
- Don’t try to remove a nest if allergic. If you’re allergic to stings, never attempt DIY wasp control.
Note: For large nests, hard-to-reach areas, or aggressive species, hire a licensed pest control expert.
